Even though the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence was read on August 17, 1945, the Netherlands decided to accept this date as Indonesia’s Independence Day in the year 2005. Now, every year on this date, they celebrate how they know best. This is just one of the activities: climbing greased poles to get to the prizes pinned at the top.
