Frost flowers form when plant stems and roots are not quite frozen and full of moisture. As that moisture is transmitted up to the higher part of the stem, it freezes, creating layers of ice. The thin layers of ice are often formed into exquisite patterns that curl into “petals” that resemble flowers.

This is actually the facade of the parking garage for the Central Branch of the public library in Kansas City. The garage wall looks like a row of giant books on a shelf. The book spines measure approximately 7.5 x 3 metres (25 x 9 feet) and are made of signboard mylar.

The shelf showcases 22 titles reflecting a wide variety of reading interests as suggested by Kansas City readers and then selected by The Kansas City Public Library Board of Trustees. Titles of the 22 volumes represented include “The Lord of the Rings” by J. R. R. Tolkien and “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury among many others.

The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster occurred on January 28, 1986, when Space Shuttle Challenger (mission STS-51-L) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of its seven crew members. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of central Florida at 11:38 EST (16:38 UTC).

The tragedy was captured in a series of photos by the grandfather of Reddit user American Mustache, who said he only discovered the images in his grandfather’s house when his grandmother passed away.

Due to heavy smog in China, the authorities in Beijing have decided to televise sunrises on giant TV screens across the city.

The futuristic screens installed in the Chinese capital usually advertize tourist destinations, but as the season’s first wave of extremely dangerous smog hit – residents donned air masks and left their homes to watch the only place where the sun would hail over the horizon.

During the Vietnam War the US left a lot of the fighter jet fuel tanks behind. During the war fighter jets could constantly fly all over Vietnam and the tactical jet planes relied on JP-8 fuel. This fuel was strapped on to the jet in external containers and when they would run out of fuel they would just drop them to lighten the weight of the plane.

The large fuel tanks were dumped onto the countryside by USAF jets so that they could maneuver better, protecting the pilots.
